Would You Inhale If It Were Legal For Personal Use?

We just might find out.

Marijuana. The possession, use, or sale of the plant became illegal in most parts of the world in the early 20th century after an increase in its use for recreational, religious or spiritual, and medicinal purposes. The plant, both it’s flowers and it’s leaves, had been highly sought after.

Big corps and governments stepped in to make their profits.

A study in 2006 discovered marijuana inhibits cancer cell growth in human breast carcinoma cells, human prostate carcimona cells, and human colectoral carcinoma cells both in vivo and in vitro, suggesting it’s use in cancer therapy. Prior to this study have been many others, including a Madrid study in 2000 discovering, among other benefits, it’s ability to shrink, even destroy, brain tumors.

Truth be told, this was actually known as far back as 1974 when researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institute of Keep Off GrassHealth, found it slowed the growth of lung and breast cancer, as well as a virus-induced leukemia. President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research, and the DEA quickly shut down the Medical College of Virginia study and all further related research, granting instead the exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies. In 1983 the Reagan/Bush Administration tried to persuade American universities and researchers to destroy all 1966-76 cannabis research work, including compendiums in libraries.

Fast forward to say… April 17, 2008. The year of Rep Barney Frank [Massachusetts-4] and Rep Ron Paul [Texas-14].

April 17, 2008, Rep Barney Frank and Rep Ron Paul introduced bill  H.R.5843.

April 17, 2008, Rep Barney Frank and Rep Ron Paul introduced a bill to Remove Federal Penalties for the Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults. A bill to eliminate most Federal penalties for possession of marijuana for personal use, or for the not-for-profit transfer between adults of marijuana for personal use. Rep William Lacy Clay [Missouri-1] signed onto the bill April 24, 2008.

On this same date April 17, 2008, Rep Barney Frank [Massachusetts-4], Ron Paul [Texas-14], Rep Dana Rohrabacher [California-46], Rep Sam Farr [California-17] , and Rep Maurice Hinchey [New York-22] introduced an additional bill, H.R.5842. The Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act, to provide for the medical use of marijuana.

Bill Clinton

These two bills follow in the footsteps of a bill Ron Paul introduced last year, on February 13, 2007. H.R.1009 was introduced to amend the Controlled Substances Act to exclude industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana; aka `Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007′. The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007 claims the U.S. government eliminates American farmers from competing in a booming and profitable hemp market while promoting the careers dependent upon foreign hemp products. Ron Paul states that growing industrial hemp Stateside could significantly reduce the trade deficit and enable the U.S. to become a more energy efficient nation. Not to be confused with it’s psychoactive cousin, cannabis sativa. Removing the term ‘Industrial Hemp’ Paragraph (16) of section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act  from the definition of marijuana would clarify the term`industrial hemp’ as the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, has a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration that does not exceed 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.

Translation: No buzz found here.

Understanding hemp’s enormous impact on key industries such as petroleum, plastics, timber and the paper industry for example, supports the claim that the threat hemp posed back in the 1930s to special interests of these natural resource companies may well account for its ban in 1937 under the Marijuana Tax Act. The Act required a sizeable transfer tax for all marijuana sales. The American Medical Association (AMA) opposed the act because the tax was imposed on physicians prescribing marijuana, retail pharmacists selling marijuana, and medical marijuana cultivation/manufacturing. In 1969, the Marijuana Tax Act was found to be unconstitutional since it violated the Fifth Amendment. In response, Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act as Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, which repealed the Marijuana Tax Act.

The provisions of the Controlled Substances Act included increasing the regulation of pharmaceuticals. Of the 5 Schedules for drugs The Act provided Schedule 1 to include drugs with a ‘high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use’, among them listing marijuana. While Hemp products themselves are legal in the United States, the DEA ban prevents United States farmers from growing it. Domestic hemp product makers must therefore turn to suppliers in countries where it is legal to grow, such as Canada, China, and most of Europe.

So there you have it. Three bills that I for one want to see passed. Do your own independent, non-biased research and decide for yourself how you feel regarding legalizing Marijuana (H.R.5843) and  (H.R.5842) , and defining the difference between Marijuana and Industrialized Hemp ( H.R.1009).

While there are many people that have used Marijuana for personal use, there are also many who have not.  If Marijuana were legalized for personal use, would you inhale?

I see many benefits to legalizing Marijuana. The United States has the largest prison population in the world, with many of these convicted of minor felonies. Remove Marijuana from the picture, we could save the money spent on these crimes, from the point of arrest through jail time. Could you imagine if alcohol were a felony? Instead of Marijuana spending our tax dollars, tax the product itself.  Regulate Marijuana not unlike tobacco and alcohol, placing this money back into our economy. Providing for the medical use of marijuana can possibly save lives. Already known as a use for pain management, those living in pain could seek this option legally. Tax the plant itself, instead of using our taxes to support the crime.

Hemp grown in North America requires no pesticides. An acre of hemp can be turned into four times as much paper as an acre of trees. The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper. This same paper can be recycled more times than tree paper and is naturally white, resulting in less sludge. There are more than 25,000 Hemp products, including cardboard, insulation, caulking, stucco and mortar, salad oil, margarine, oil paints, fuel, soap, shampoo and cosmetics. Cannabis produces monterpenes, which have been shown to slow global warming. This isn’t about drugs, it’s about creating goods in a sustainable method.

As George Washington wrote back in 1794:
“Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere.”

Those are a few thoughts, I could make this article longer and give you more. But more voices need to be heard. What are your thoughts on this subject, on any of these three bills? Do you see benefits, or do you see this backfiring if these bills get passed?

You can contact your representatives to voice your opinion on any of these bills. Your representatives need to hear from you, to know how you want your vote voiced; provide your representatives the incentive to sponser these bills by letting them know this is the direction you want them to go. If your representative is already supporting any of these bills, it’s always welcome to send a thank you!

  1. I have watched 2 relatives retching their guts out from chemo. I did the same thing. Instead of staying sick, I smoked a little weed. I felt better, got better, and became a well, contributing citizen. If there were definitive tests that would insure stoned individuals were not operating forklifts, or driving (like breathalizers) there might not be the opposition there is to recreational and medicinal use of hemp, pot, marijuana, or what ever you choose to call it. Criminalization of cannabis has cost billions for the American tax payer. But if anyone really looks at it, this is another smoke and mirrors tactic to divert attention away from legitimate issues. Find something viseral and no one pays attention to tax breaks for billionaires or cutting school programs. OH Shit! My progressive leanings are showing!

  2. I can’t stand the smell of it. And wouldn’t smoke if it were legal. But I do think it is less harmful than alcohol. Less dangerous. By legalizing it, I think there would be less crime too.

To many people are in prison or jail on tax money over this. Too much police time is taken up over it. There are far worse crimes going on in the world to focus on pot growing or smoking.

  3. Jennie - I have a friend going through chemo right now, she’s sick sick sick. Her white blood cells are flat out gone. If this could make her well, by golly I’ll find it. She has two children, both extremely young. One is a newborn. Did it make you feel better or do think this helped you to GET better? I really fear at this point that she is going to die.

  4. dissfunktional I knew someone with cancer who smoked it because she could not eat. She couldn’t keep anything down. I know it helped her in that regard. I’m sorry to hear about your friend, I’ll keep her in my thoughts.

  5. if you know anyone that feels this helped them in any way, in any way at all, during cancer (particularly breast cancer) please let me know. I really need to talk to them.

If anybody reads this article and can advise on the same, it would be very, very greatly appreciated. If someone advises against it, I need that info too.

Time is actually not on our side right now. I can also be contacted via email, the link is on the sidebar, I’ll put a clickable link here as well:

thank you for your kind words beadden!

  6. Do you mind of I spread the word?

  7. I think that’s ok. I’m looking for help for her, she’s getting worse.

  8. [...] Marijuana and Cancer…does it help? An urgent appeal for info. May 3, 2008 — thebeadden Do you know anyone who has been helped by using it during cancer treatment? This is an appeal for information. If anyone knows anyone with information about this, please go to this site. [...]

  9. Diss, I’m very sorry to hear your friend is poorly and that time is of the essence. I know in California people can get legal (in-state_ prescriptions for medical marijuana (illegal under Fed. law) but I don’t know about other places. I will ask around about it helping cancer. I know some people. For the record, I don’t believe any drug should be flat-out illegal, if sensible steps are taken, but, particularly this one. Alcohol has caused many more problems IMO.

  10. thank you muse, I appreciate your input. it wasn’t the reason for the post, but it’s how it’s coming about. funny how things play out, hm? Had Jennie not mentioned her own experience, I wouldn’t have brought it up even. I’m looking forward to whatever more I can discover.

  11. diss, if your friend is that sick and ondansetran and stemetil are not helping her, get her some pot. As another former cancer patient, I can tell you that my doctors and nurses recommended it to me, although I detest the smell and wouldn’t have smoked it.

However, eating it cooked in things is another option altogether.

It certainly should be decriminalized for medical use. The problem is, the mob controls the recreational pot market both in Canada and the US (please don’t let anyone tell you different; if you didn’t grow it yourself, the mob got a piece of the action). Also, the kind of people who generally campaign for “medical uses” have quite different uses in mind, either getting rich by selling pot to sick people, or using it recreationally. That’s cast a shadow over the whole movement.

It’s a fine medicine with a wide variety of benefits and few sideeffects that should be decriminalized and made available by prescription. And any politician who says otherwise has never had to nurse someone through chemo or MS.

  12. I sent to her the articles in the top of the post. I’m scared too that I’ll get it for her, and that I’ll end up getting her sicker somehow, because I didn’t know something that I would have had I just read more. I’m scared of making the wrong decision.

She’s a very careful person, she eats very healthy, organic mostly. I know she would want to research this beforehand, but she’s just so sick. She trusts me a LOT though. I don’t want to screw this up.

I hadn’t heard of eating it before. I’m going to look into that too. Thanks rain!

  13. I just found another great link -

    http://www.efluxmedia.com/news_Chemical_in_Marijuana_Fights_Breast_Cancer_10828.html

  14. My wife has MS, Diss - and she was recommended to use weed to help, I know MS isn’t cancer and I am sorry to hear about your friend.

Funnily enough the doctor who said use it did say that using weed would be far cheaper than buying the drugs she will need.

    Mental eh?

  15. thank you for your input Will, greatly appreciated. In what ways does it help your wife with her MS? I’m thinking maybe with her appetite, and with pain. Does it increase her ability to get around? What are her thoughts and her doctors as to it’s ability to get her well?

I’m learning there are differences in the types of weed, and there are strains that help better than others, depending on what is needed. Fascinating stuff. A damn shame this has been withdrawn from the public the way it has. A damn shame.

  16. I can’t say that the cannabis cured me. What it did was allow me to eat. I was so weak from vomiting, I was exhausted, I really didn’t want to try anymore. I smoked and the nausea left me. I was hungary. I wanted and could finally eat food. I really think that helped cure me. How can one fight a disease if one doesn’t have the fuel?

  17. I am so sorry about your friend. Do you know if they got all of the cancer? Because if it is the chemo that is making her weak then pot will help because it relieves the nausea and truthfully took away a lot of stress and made some of the pain bearable. If they didn’t, then I don’t know if it will help or not. All I can say is be sure of your source, make sure it’s not laced with any other drugs. If she can’t smoke it, it really does work to bake it in brownies. (I did learn a few skills in the 70’s) If the only thing it does is relieve her stress, it would be worth it.

  18. I hear you on the source - that’s a concern. One of a few. I don’t want her smoking anything laced with tobacco or tea, etc. either. Just pure, medicine intent, and the best strain for her needs as well. Thank you Jennie for bringing the subject up initially, this has been very, very helpful.

  19. Tobacco or tea won’t be a problem. It’s other chemicals to worry about like crack or meth. As for finding a source, go to any fraternity in the USA and someone there will be able to help or ask a few friends (they will have at least one stoner relative) It’s criminal that someone has to suffer like this. If the government really wanted to wipe out drug related crime and the national debt, all they would have to do is legalize pot and sell it in government stores like many states that have ABC stores or special liscense liquor stores. Regulate and tax just like tobacco and alchol.

  20. “government stores like many states that have ABC stores”

what is that? I’m not sure I’ve heard of these stores!

  21. http://www.counterpunch.org/gardner05032008.html

  22. ” It didn’t even make the “Project Censored” list of under-reported stories for 2005. “We were even censored by Project Censored”

This is really beginning to piss me off.

  23. thank you for your input Will, greatly appreciated.

The drug is decriminalised in this part of Canada, Diss - but that doesn’t stop the police raids on those who use and grow the stuff.

What I thought when he recommended it was with shock at first. She will use it very sparingly for the pain that she has. Not wanting to go into all the technicalities of it all the lesions on the white matter cause her a lot of pain and it does help.

I do know a few people who really do use it for medical reasons - but they are ostracised because it is an ‘illegal’ substance.

My wife still uses the script drugs - but they are vastly expensive, in Canada they don’t have the same healthcare system as the UK, in the UK a script is about $12 per item no matter what is prescribed. If we could move to the UK we would.

  24. ABC store is Alcohol Beverage Control which is state run stores that sell hard liquor in NC. SC has “Red Dots” liscensed to sell for the state. NY has state liscensed stores that sell wine and liquor. So each state is different. Chicago you buy it at Walgreens!

  25. Will

The drug is decriminalised in this part of Canada, Diss - but that doesn’t stop the police raids on those who use and grow the stuff.

makes no sense at all to me.

Are folks arrested for driving through green lights and stopping at stop signs as well?

Gosh I hope insurance is helping with her meds. If she is consuming aspartame in any amount I’ve understood that to be a problem with MS, in addition to a whole bundle of other issues. Thought I’d throw that in there in case you hadn’t heard about that yet.

Jennie, isn’t Barack Obama from Chicago? Illinois Senate? Nothing surprises me with Chicago anymore. It’s pretty outrageous what goes on out there. I can ’see’ beer at a Walgreens, but liquor? Wow! I wonder if they will sell it on a Sunday. Some liquor stores I’ve seen that are open on Sunday won’t sell wine or liquor, only beer.

  26. Diss, I’m from Illinois (So. Ill) and yes liquor is sold on Sundays. As far as the pot issue, I support Ron Paul and the bills he introduced would do far more than provide relief for the ill, It’s food, fuel, fiber, some even say that it’s the healing of a nation in the terms that our farmers would have a huge cash crop and would be a real economic stimulus.
However, big pharmacy will never let this happen because with natural alternatives to dangerous man made meds means less money for the pharmaceutical companies and we all know that this country is truly ran by big business.
Having said that my wife was told she has neuropathy and has very little faith in the doctors in our area and the treatment recommended (neurotin…do a quick google search and you will see why),but with a daily use of herb she is able to cope with the debilitating disease and its effects, ease the numbness and dulls the shooting pain in the limbs.
Hope this helps to show the benefits of this natural medication, and as far as finding herb laced with chemicals is highly unlikely as most who smoke herb are often the kindest of people and willing to help any way they can, at least in my part of the country.

  27. Diss,
If the worry of the smoke inhalation or the smell is bothersome you might look into using a vaporizer, as it eliminates the smoke altogether. This is also one of the most effective method of delivery to the body. Hope this helps.

    Jah Bless From So. Ill

  28. I’ve heard back from her on this idea, she sounds open to it. She’s also said “wow, you really think outside the box!”. haha.. She’s still feeling like mud. I’ve recommended for the moment for her to ask her doctor for access to a doctor in a state where it is legal to be prescribed, in order for her to obtain it legally for medical use. We’ll see how this goes.

  29. Any suggestions on this?
She has a doctors appt on Friday and will bring it up with her doctor. She asked me for suggestions on how to bring it up. I had suggested maybe printing out the bills (in the above article) and maybe some of the articles, I also told her her doctor will have already heard of this before.

She’ll be bringing it up with a doctor in a state where it is not legal.

  30. I’m of the opinion it might help. Mary Jane and I have had a lifelong relationship. Iv’e found that it definitely helps me out from a mental balancing standpoint. I’m a very high energy guy that is usually glowing with happiness, but when i get depressed it’s massive - almost a total shift. Not bi-polar or anything, and certainly not manic, but severe nonetheless.

I’ve also got some stomach ailments - such as diverticulitis. Now, truth be told - smoking is about the worst thing in the world for that - but it does the trick with the pains I get.

I’ve no idea about something this serious though. My gut tells me (and it’s just opinion) that yes, it probably could help. THC is a powerful substance releasing dopamine and such in the brain.

  31. She took my suggestion and had a talk with her doctor about it. Here is an update from her, via her email to me just recently:

So I had the “talk” with my doctor and she was AWESOME. She gave me a prescription for a medicine called Marinol which is very similar to ‘it’, but also said if I can get the real thing, to go for it. Hubby is taking care of that so I should be all set. I have also started a new chemo med called Taxol which should be less harsh. That would be great as you know, I need a break.

Since I was feeling a bit better, we snuck down to the beach to get away for a few days. It was so great to get away. Change of scenery is always good.

I hope you are doing great, you have been such a great friend. I can’t thank you enough.

I hope to goodness this plant gets approved for medical use! People should not be arrested nor scared of being arrested for a solution that works.

Remember to use the link above - to write to your representatives - tell them why this bill needs to be passed.

It needs as many sponsors as possible!

Thank you so very much to all of you for your input. YOU ROCK. You really made a positive difference in a person’s life - and to top it off, she’s a mom!

  32. I agree Diss. It’s a shame that something that works and can help to relieve pain and suffering is not legal.

I’m so happy to hear she is feeling better, I had been wondering if there might be an update. Please tell her that I’m keeping her in my thoughts.

    Take care!

  34. Maybe we should send him this post, and ask for his support on these bills too. This was terrible news when I saw it on the telly, I was stunned. He doesn’t look how I remember him. I hope the best for him and his family.

  35. I have an update regarding my friend; she is now finished Chemo.(and celebrating that fact!) she was scheduled to begin radiation treatments after chemo. However it’s since been discovered that she carries a gene that is thought to be responsible for her cancer (I have the name of that gene in an email, just don’t know it offhand). So instead of the radiation treatment, she is scheduled for surgery. She’s going to have her ovaries and breasts removed in order to help thwart future cancers. She’ll have breast reconstruction compliments of the insurance company, which she’s thrilled about (breast fed two babies). She’s worn out, yet has an incredible outlook on life that she never had before. She’s also looking forward to her hair growing back now! Her dad had shaved his own head at the beginning of all this to support her.

She wants to thank everyone for all of their input here. That change of her meds to Marinol made a huge difference. Marinol has the attributes that marijuana has that enables those with cancer to eat, etc. It was when I sent her all of this feedback from you folks that she went to her doctor with this data, and that led to her ability to keep food down. Food = fuel. She regained strength and began spending more quality time with her children and her husband. This will be behind her soon enough, and she’ll have lived through it.

    Thanks all.

  36. It’s very kind of you to give us this update, diss! So glad she’s doing so much better and has found a treatment that works for her. Sounds like very major surgery; I’ll keep her (and you) in my good thoughts.

  37. Great news, diss. I’m glad to hear she is on the road to recovery. Thanks for posting the update. Let her know we’ll continue to keep here in our thoughts.

    Take care.

  38. Am I the only one that did not know that Montel Williams has MS? I learned it today, while doing further reading on Marijuana. He’s all for the legalizing of Marijuana for med use, and was at a fund raiser in New York for same. Many celebrities were there.
